Ep 31: LIVING WITH HIV

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system, but with modern medicine, people living with HIV can live long, healthy lives. The first step is testing. HIV testing is quick, safe, and confidential. Most tests use a small blood sample or an oral swab and can provide results in as little as 20 minutes. Health experts recommend that everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 get tested at least once, and people with higher risk should test more regularly.
      Early detection is important because treatment works best when HIV is diagnosed early. Today, HIV is treated with antiretroviral therapy (ART), a daily medication that reduces the amount of virus in the body. When taken consistently, ART can lower the virus to undetectable levels. This not only protects a person’s immune system but also prevents the virus from being transmitted to others.
People living with HIV who receive proper treatment can expect to live nearly the same lifespan as someone without HIV. Regular medical care, medication adherence, and a healthy lifestyle are key to managing the condition.
