Ep 10: PRIDE MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER

Queer Onda El Paso’s mission is to help provide voice and visibility to members of the LGBTQ community. In our nine episodes we have talked to some amazing guests who have shared their unique story and provided interesting insights that we hope have been beneficial to our listeners. In celebration of Pride month we have also been spotlighting a few of the many different kinds of Queer families in our area.
 
We have enjoyed working on this podcast and look forward to continuing our vision. And since it is Pride Month, I would like to say a few words about why the queer voice and our visibility is important.
 
It was the queer voice that chanted in the streets in front of the Stonewall in New York that gave birth to the Pride movement in 1968. It was the brave men and women, and especially drag queens that demanded a spotlight to give visibility to how unfairly we were being treated in the United States.
 
Today, the need to raise our voices and become visible is more important than ever. The current political climate in Texas seems to echo the dark days in 1968 New York – only this time our battle grounds are not in the street - they are in the courtrooms and ballot boxes.
 
It is our responsibility to honor all of the queer men and women who have fought before us to insist on the same basic rights as any other American. we need to remember that Pride is a movement – and not just a party. Pride serves as a beacon to those who are still struggling with finding or publicly acknowledging their identity. Pride is also an everyday celebration for those of us who are out and proud.  So, this month, and every month after, let’s continue to do the work that needs to be done. But of course, let’s also celebrate- together.
